Dari Tafsir Toleransi menuju Tafsir Multikultural: Rekonstruksi Epistemologi Penafsiran Ayat-Ayat Ikhtilaf dalam Tafsir Al-Mishbah di Tengah Polarisasi Digital Keagamaan Indonesia

This study aims to reconstruct the epistemology of interpreting controversial verses in the Qur’an through a multicultural exegesis paradigm as a response to the phenomenon of religious digital polarization in Indonesia. This study is motivated by the increasing fragmentation of interpretive authority, the spread of narratives of intolerance, and the strengthening of instant and reductionist textual interpretation practices in the digital space. The study employs a qualitative approach based on library research with a social-contextual hermeneutic perspective. The primary data sources for this study include Qur’anic verses on plurality and ikhtilaf, M. Quraish Shihab’s Tafsir Al-Mishbah, as well as relevant works by Fazlur Rahman and Bhikhu Parekh on contextual hermeneutics and multiculturalism theory. Data were collected through documentation techniques and analyzed using critical content analysis with an interpretive-hermeneutic approach. The results indicate that the paradigm of tolerant exegesis developing within social exegesis studies still tends to remain at the normative-ethical level and has not yet fully established plurality as the epistemological foundation for Qur’anic interpretation. This study found that the verses on ikhtilaf in the Qur’an contain dialogical values, recognition of differences, and an ethical orientation that positions plurality as part of the sunnatullah. Based on these findings, this study proposes the concept of Qur’anic multicultural hermeneutics as a new paradigm in contemporary Qur’anic Studies that integrates text, context, and digital reality into the interpretive process. This paradigm has implications for strengthening digital religious moderation, developing Qur’an-based religious media literacy, and fostering a culture of dialogue within Indonesia’s multicultural society.
