The Implementation of the Targhib wa tarhib Method in Enhancing Student’s Discipline at Jamiatul Ulum Islamic Boarding School

Abstract

Discipline is an essential aspect of character and behavior development for students in Islamic boarding schools. However, some students at Pondok Pesantren Jamiatul Ulum still face difficulties in maintaining discipline in worship, learning, and daily activities. This study aims to examine the implementation of the targhib wa tarhib method in effectively enhancing students’ discipline. A qualitative approach with a phenomenological method was used, including in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. Data were analyzed inductively following Miles and Huberman’s model, including data collection, reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the targhib wa tarhib method is implemented in three stages: planning (establishing rules, schedules, and discipline indicators), implementation (providing positive reinforcement through praise, prayer, exemplary behavior, and simple rewards, alongside gradual educational sanctions), and evaluation (monitoring behavior and providing further guidance). Initially motivated by praise or fear of sanctions, students gradually develop discipline as personal awareness and responsibility. Therefore, the targhib wa tarhib method effectively shapes students into well-mannered, polite, and responsible individuals.
